Work From Home

Work From Home Introduction
Do you get tired of the dail slog to work, getting stuck in endless traffic, or paying large sums of money for public transport per year? Would you like to work from home in a nice comfortable office with no interruptions, so you can concentrate on getting the job done? No more wasteful meetings which really don’t achieve very much and no more having to deal with the awkward office manipulator. Sounds like bliss doesn’t it?

Work From Home Lifestyle
Britain was once a nation of cottage industries and to some extent that mentality is still part of our culture. Being independent, doing an honest day’s work for an honest wage means that a person can respect him/herself and live in harmony with ones neighbour. Once industrialisation began, that independent way of life was swept away and in the process something important was lost. I think that in Britain as well as in many other countries, there is yearning to return to a way of life that is ethical, sincere and honest. So what is to stop you from taking advantage of a new lifestyle opportunity and Work from home?

Ideas to help you Work from Home
Work from home opportunities exist today in their thousands and to help you with some ideas see this site which offers proven home business opportunities.

If you already have expertise in specific areas, then look at how you can adapt your life to be able to Work from home. Using your home as a base with an office is particularly good when you work as a consultant with specialist skills to offer.

Example
A Health and Safety Officer in a large blue chip company decided to set up his own advisory consultacny and work from home. He negotiated a deal with the company he was employed by and then offered his services to other equally large organisations. I spoke to him about six months after he started his business and he told me he was incredibly busy and he had never been so happy in his life. Health and safety issues is something with which all companies have to pay comply, so to have someone come in and advise them what needs to be done before they get inspected saved them being fined or even closed down.

When I decided to work from home, it was a big gamble. I borrowed money from the bank so that 6 months of salary was covered. This took about 6 years to repay completely, and sometimes quite frankly it has been a struggle, but I have never regretted it. My type of business in computers doing website engineering and project management, lends itself brilliantly to a work from home situation. I have a virtual office, with other people working in the business who also work from home. If you are a computer literate there are many opportunities to set up an income stream for yourself before giving up your main salaried work. With a free business opportunity you can even start your new idea working in the evening and weekends until you have generated enough income to give in your notice.

But before you decide how much or how little work at home you are going to do, you need to fully consider all of the aspects that work at home entails. (See a previous article: Considering A Work At Home Opportunity?)

Work At Home Success Stories
A friend of mine worked in local government as a town planner. He is a qualified surveyor with a degree, but working in local government paid a minimum salary, with a secure position and a pension when he retired at 65 years of age. His wife was a teacher, and she earned slightly more than he did, and together they could just about get by on both salaries bringing up their two children.

One day he announced he was setting up in business on his own. He had had enough of the poor treatment and lack of respect he received in the department, apart from the pittance in pay. He had a good chunk of money in the bank which gave him the security he wanted for a year until the business proved a success. Since day one he has had lots of work, advising people on planning applications, getting rid of waste properly, what is and what is not allowable in the planning world. He hasn’t looked back since and to this day he has not had to dip into his secure funds to top up his earnings. They have never been so well off and when his wife became ill and had to give up her teaching job, they were still able to manage comfortably. He started up in the small back bedroom of their house but he has expanded so fast he now employs four full time surveyors, his wife to do accounts and administration and they have needed to move into larger office premises.

Conclusion
The successes in these stories did not come about by chance. They are the results of vision know-how, planning and persistence, and sheer hard work. Nobody said it would be easy but when something is right for you, somehow you find it all falling into place and your vision becomes a reality. Do Plumbers Really Have Dripping Taps?

Like the plumber who has a dripping tap in his house because he is always out doing jobs for other people, the Advanta website has been long overdue for an update.

I wonder if that is really true about the plumber with a dripping tap, although I suspect it is, because in business, no matter how successful you are, if there is paying work to be done then that is always going to take priority over an internal job, and like plumbers we have what appears to be a never ending stream of website and website updates to work on.

However, I've had Ben the graphic designer in the office this week doing some work on an ebay sales page project we're doing, and so whilst he was here I thought I would ask him to put together some montages of sites we've completely recently to go on the website.

When I started looking at it I was struck at just how many websites we've worked on since I last updated the website, and also how the focus of the business has moved away from the Internet Solutions side of the business in favour of the website development.

Please take a look at our updated website development homepage :-)

From Sexy Underwear to WEEE

Yes it's true, at Advanta we operate in a widely diverse spectrum of industries!

Last month we put the finishing touches to the Underwraps Lingerie website which is proving to be incredibly successful in selling Designer Lingerie online. The site even started getting orders from throughout Europe before we took it live because I linked the holding page to the inner pages with a hyperlinked full stop. (I was trying to give Google a head start on indexing all the product pages before we took it live)

However, this month our joy and enthusiasm to get to work has depreciated slightly as we are currently working on the latest Biffa website. I mean don't get me wrong we love working for Biffa as they are a great client, good payers :-), and have lots of web work, but the new Transform website which deals with the obligation of manufacturers(and importers) in the disposal of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) just doesn't compare to having to look at pages and pages of slinky models in the latest underwear, swimsuits and nightwear!

Some business anaylists would say we lack a vertical market, but we prefer to think of it as being able to enjoy a wide and varied range of work. Next month it's time to start on B-Loony Promo 2.0 the UK's leading provider of printed promotional giveaways , maybe we should consider approaching the designer lingerie market vertically afterall!

Other projects during August 2008 included:
